Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) Accelerated Healing at SL Dental CentreAt SL Dental Centre, Dr. Sean Lee uses Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) for effective post treatment healing for extractions and bone grafts with implants. Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) has long been used in hospitals to accelerate the body’s own healing process. Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) has also been know to decrease the amount of discomfort following dental surgery.

What is Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

Platelet Rich Fibrin is a by-product of your own blood that is rich in platelets. Blood Platelets perform several functions including blood clot formation and the release of growth factors to help heal wounds.

It is a simple process that is done in the practice the same day as your dental treatment. A small amount of blood is collected from the patient’s own body and then placed in a centrifugal machine. The blood then separates into the plasma fibrin from the red blood cells. We then place the extracted Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) in the extraction socket.

Research has shown that PRF has been effective in expediting the healing process and increasing the degree of comfort immediately after their procedure and is a simple safe procedure.

Where was Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) developed?

An effective post-treatment healing process now available in Calgary, Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) was first pioneered by Dr. Joseph Choukroun, a physician in France, who practiced both as a cardiothoracic surgeon and an anesthesiologist.

What is the Benefit of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

The science behind the extraction and wound healing may be meaningful to our patients even if the details of the biochemistry are not. Studies performed on Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) for wound healing indicate a continual and gradual release of growth factors over the course of a week. When we apply PRF in the extraction area, it regenerates at a faster pace than it would otherwise. This equates to greater patient comfort, faster recovery, and restored function!
